Dishwasher in most households, is the most sparkling kitchen equipment. But inside each dishwasher, could be a santuary of potentially deadly bugs.
This device may clean dishes and eating utensils by spraying hot water, but it could also be a perfect nursing ground for disease-causing fungi. It is actually the moist and hot environment, mixed with alkaline water inside the machine that makes it conducive for bugs to live and breed inside. Many research on this suggest the serious threat to human health.
One study says that, 62% of dishwashers out of 189 from 101 different home all over the worlds shows a contamination of fungi on the rubber band of the machine's door. More than half of the said findings includes E. phaeomuriformis and black yeasts Exophiala dermatitidis, which are known to pose serious threat to human health.
Dr. Polona Zalar from University of Ljubljana and a writer of journal Fungl Biology, said that the potential hazards should no be overlooked.”
Nina Gunde-Cimerman, Dr. Polona's co-author, told The Daily Telegraph that one thing not included n their report was that, after testing the dishes cleaned by the dishwasher, they found significant amount of black yeast, so too the utensils you put inside your mouth.
Black yeast can be potentiall dangerous to individuals with cystic fibrosis, and it can directly attack the lungs. Black yeast have also been found to occassionally cause serious infections to healthy humans, as both species of Exophiala displays a tough tolerance from. Aggressive detergents, heat, high sodium or salt concentration, and to both acidic and alkaline water. This actually explains how these fungi survive in high temperature (60º to 80º C) ande even with the presence of detergents and salt water.
